Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live. - Norman Cousins

Carlos paced outside the exit. There was nothing else he could do – he was a walking liability, through no fault of his own. It had happened, and he hadn't seen it coming. McCoy had made things very clear.

“Son. You have to stay here,” he'd said. “We don't know how much damage he's done to you. If he's tried to get at the Senior Council, god knows what he's done to the young Wardens.”

“But you have no proof that he's done anything to me,” Carlos had protested in return. He knew intellectually that McCoy was right, but he didn't want to think about it. The fact that his mind might have been altered, made to do things against his will, with the power that they carried?

“Carlos. You are a known ally of Hoss. You are one of the Wardens the younger ones look up to. I hate to say it, more than you will know, but he's going to have gotten to you, you just can't remember it.. And I can't have someone like you in the Council chamber when we bring the evidence to Peabody. He mustn't be able to use you. You're too important to what we have here.”

“I can't just sit about here doing nothing,” Carlos said, an unfamiliar edge of panic to his voice.

“You've done your bit, Regional Commander,” McCoy said, standing up straighter. “You helped me find the evidence to implicate him. We've got him where we can force him to make his move.” He relented. “Go guard the west gate. I know it's not likely he'll go out that way, but you never know.”

Carlos nodded, appreciating the fact that yes, it was busy work, keeping him safe, but it was also a possibility.

As he paced outside, he tried not to think how it had happened. His mind, invaded by another... God, how much of his personality could he call his own? Stop it Ramirez. This isn't helping. He stopped pacing the second he heard screaming in the distance. Dios, it's started, he thought, momentarily scared. Hopefully the range of influence wouldn't be too great...
